My love of horses started from a young age, a farmer’s daughter I was lucky enough to have my own pony and enjoyed the fun and excellent education at Easton Harriers Pony Club.
Whilst at college, I was asked to join Geoff Hubbard at Worlingworth Hall Stud, exercising the racehorses in training working as a groom to show horses.
After ponies, the first horse I owned was a thoroughbred weanling, and this was when I found my love of flat work / dressage as I was forced to school!
Unable to afford the type of horses I needed for my dressage career, I had to start with unbroken projects and train them myself. Since those early days I have started to breed and train my own.
The first homebred, which is my current competition horse, was born in 2010, Woodthorpe Little Madam aka Maddy who I have trained from the beginning, she has achieved more than I could ever have imagined, recently qualifying for PSG. Finally, my lifelong ambition of wearing my tailcoat has been realised. Her mother, Keystone Havana, was a fantastic horse and I competed her at the National Championships in 2007.
I have two more homebreds. Woodthorpe Master Dumbledore aka Dumble, who is in training with dressage rider, Lewis Carrier, he’s 8 years old and already competing at PSG. It is hoped he will make it to Grand Prix, and who knows maybe be Lewis’s next GB team horse!
Then there is Woodthorpe Miss-a-Trick, who is 7, she is very sharp and needed a bit more time to gain her confidence! Working at home at Medium level she is due to head out to her first competition soon.
Combining my love of training in the commercial world with my love and experience of training horses, I now look forward to helping riders develop the skills needed to enjoy every moment they spend with their horses. I want riders to appreciate that schooling/flat work is the foundation for everything we do. Hacking - giving us the skills to deal with our horse shying. Jumping - giving us the skills to gain those extra seconds against the clock. Cross-Country - gives us the skills to shorten and lengthen strides for tricky combinations.
It gives me enormous joy to see my pupils out having success and they regularly hold the top places in dressage and eventing competitions. I am patient and supportive; you’ll often see me at competitions supporting my pupils in the warm-up.
I'm really pleased to be working with the team at Harling Wood Stud and look forward to helping more riders compete successfully.
